Yolly & Joal : Darling

I'm not going to lie, I fall more in love with photography through the people in front of my lens.
People like Yolly & Joal are the reason.
The stories. The kisses. The tight embraces.
The smiles in between takes.
The holding hands. The belly rubs.
The hair blowing in the wind. The whispers.
The silly memories. The plans for the future.
It's like I'm living in a love story.

Yolly & Joal will be welcoming a sweet little baby boy in a few weeks. It was so refreshing to hear them wonder about baby Milo. What he'll look like. What his cry will sound like. If he'll be tall like Daddy. I can't even imagine the anticipation they must be feeling but I'm so stoked to be along for the ride. Thanks you two! I had such a fabulous afternoon with you. See you soon!

It's the connections. The connections with my clients is why I love my job. Being part of someone's story, being part of someone's life. Whenever I think about it, I let out a huge sigh because, well, it knocks the wind out of me. Every time. I love being able to connect their life with the happenings of mine. This week, I found a crazy similarity. 4 maternity & baby sessions in one week. The same week I finalize the details of my new baby. Although mine isn't a human baby, it's still close to my heart and I plan on loving it, nurturing it, just like my clients plan on caring for their new additions. I'm so thrilled you all will be around as I introduce my new baby.

Allison & Jimmy : Darling

Beautiful purple fields, gorgeous February sunlight, insanely happy parents to be. That's all we needed for this session. Allison and Jimmy are expecting their first little one in 3 weeks. Their little boy will be making his debut in a short time but these two are so ready for him.

I had such a blast with Allison and "you". They made me laugh like no other. My favorite type of conversation with my clients is the inappropriate, insanely funny kind, witty banter type. I was definitely on my toes the whole time. I cannot wait for baby James' arrival in March. I feel blessed I get to meet him soon!

Jean & Justin : Engaged

They met in high school. And that was it. According to them, there isn't even a story to tell. They both went their separate ways and their journeys could not have been more different. Jean's journey took her to college in Long Beach and a job in San Diego. Justin's journey took him to New York to attend dental school and ultimately a practice in Palm Springs. But both of them agree on one thing, they did everything in their power to build a life faraway from their hometown. They wanted something new, something different, something all their own. While away, they each realized that being far from their strong family ties was difficult and returned home. And, as with everything, fate intervened.

Jean and Justin met 10 years later in their hometown. Again. This time though, there is a story to tell. This time, they had each other. I can't describe the connection these two have. They act on it, they show it, they speak about it. During our session, Justin walked off for a few minutes and like all girls do, Jean and I started gushing. With the biggest smile, she said, "He's the nicest man. THE nicest. I don't know how I got so lucky." And in just a few short months, Jean and Justin will continue their journey building their own little family, together, in their hometown.

Jean and Justin, words can't express how much I love you guys. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being so genuine, open and honest. I am honored to share such special moments with you. And seriously, how could I not love you guys for force feeding me sliders, pommes frites and donuts. Come on! See you both in May!

Valentine's Day Loveliness

In honor of the upcoming Valentine's holiday, I thought it'd be fun to put a gift-giving guide together for boyfriends, fiances, husbands, brothers, sons, guys wanting to score some points, etc.

Last week, I had the honor of capturing the Valentine's Day Collection for JL Designs and can I just say WOWZA! Aside from being the most fabulous arrangements, Carissa has made things even easier for you. She's styled each arrangement for a certain person so all you have to do is know a little bit about your special someone. Seriously, if you're into buying flowers, don't go the boring market flower route. Check the rest of Carissa's designs out here. Just throwing it out there that I am, well, a romantic.

Or perhaps she'd like a fabulous, functional bag - say, the Kelly Moore Bag. A bag that could be used as a purse, a camera bag, a carry-on, a diaper bag, a sneak snacks into the movies bag. My favorite is the grey because it could be worn with anything and it makes a wedding photographer look extra stylish when she's shooting.

I'm a huge fan of Anthropologie so anything from that store makes me weak in the knees. I especially love their accessories but I never buy them for myself because of the price and I imagine a lot of girls are similar. So, if you want to make her really happy, splurge on Anthro.

Last but definitely not least, how about a love print. When I was planning our wedding, I stumbled on the Made By Girl website and I was hooked. All her prints are so simple and charming. They are perfect for any modern decor and add a little whimsy to walls everywhere.

I interrupt our regularly scheduled programming for an announcement: we have a new home! My brain has been temporarily taken over by little aliens that only want to furniture shop and pick out paint colors. Aliens that think about red kitchen cabinets and trash compactors. Aliens that make me sit on 32 different couches until the comfiest, coolest one is found. The aliens have also taken over Steven's brain too. Would you believe that he spent last night scouring the interwebz for the perfect desk option for my new office? I'm telling you, these aliens are freakin' me out!

I'm so excited to start a new chapter in our lives. For us to be able to grow individually and together. For my little business to have it's own space. For dinner parties and client meetings. And maybe, in a few years, grow a little family. Maybe. I'm just incredibly thrilled to be on to the next step in this amazing thing called life with my man and our kitty.

And just for fun, here are a few shots Steven caught of me at Vanessa & Daniel's engagement session. I'm not gonna lie, the laying down shot mortified me the first time I saw it. The only reason I'm blogging it is so I can be embarrassed a little to start becoming aware and accountable of how I look when I shoot. As you can see, I'm not very ladylike!

I was content. Sitting there in my bra and underwear, getting my hair and makeup done, listening to the sounds of my bridesmaids giggling and my nieces playing. I was 2 hours away from marrying my favoritest man on the planet and in that moment, I could feel that our day would be perfect. It was then when our photographer Jasmine Star was photographing my dress and said, "Okay, I so want to get your wedding published!". I smiled and nodded. Although to me, our wedding was awesome, never in my wildest dreams did I think a publication would think it was. Plus, ALL the weddings Jasmine photographs are insanely gorgeous so how could our day compare to her other weddings?

Well to my surprise, the editors at The Knot thought our wedding was worthy enough to share. In print. In a magazine. Sold in stores. Nationally. TO FUTURE BRIDES-TO-BE! Steven and I are beyond excited. To be honest, I squealed like a little kid when I first saw it and he walked with a little extra pep in his step. We're already exhausted from autographing copies for my Mom! I want to thank Jasmine for documenting every last detail of our day so beautifully. And to all of our vendors, thank you for being so amazing and helping make our day so dang special!

A special shout out to Gladys Jem for spotting us and alerting me via twitter. STILL amazed at the power of the internet. Holler!

I'll Never...

I'm the type of girl that sometimes eats her words. What can I say? I live for the moment. I love hard, I'm passionate and more often than not, my feelings change from minute to minute. So it's no surprise that I've taken back many bold statements on a daily basis. Hey, at least I can admit it!

"I'll never be an Uggs-wearing type of girl" My parents bought me a pair for my birthday two weeks ago and I can't take them off. I'll admit, I haven't worn them out of the house just yet, in fear of someone running up and pointing at me saying "Ooooh you're wearing Uggs! You said you'd never wear Uggs!" But as each day goes on, I'm getting over it.

"I'll never own a pet. Ever." Growing up, we never had pets. I never understood people who sent out holiday cards with a picture of their dog in a Santa hat. I never understood people who let their pet lick their face. Picking up poop and scratching and whining sounded more like a chore than fun. Then I met Steven. The world's biggest animal lover. And he bought me a kitten. Oh hell, I've been eating my stupid little words ever since. I love my Zoe!

"I'll never, under any circumstance, blog a photograph straight-out-of-camera (SOOC)." Yet, here I am. About to expose myself. I kinda feel like I'm standing here naked. Cover your eyes or something people! But in all seriousness, I've received some emails asking how I created my style so I figured I'd touch on the subject a little. I'm not a genius at photoshop but I definitely utilize it to make my photos pop.

On all my photos, I use a combination of Curves, Yin/Yang, Clare-ify and Sharpen for Web from the TRA mix. Sometimes, if an image is too warm, Cool as a Cucumber comes to the rescue. It's taken me what feels like a billion years to be comfortable with photoshop so I urge you to purchase a set of actions. Using actions is what helped me learn how to manipulate my photos. I run an action, and then backtrack in the history tab to see how exactly things are happening. Happy action-ing!

Vanessa & Daniel : Engaged

What better way to start off the new year than with one of my beautiful couples! Some may think it's funny that I call couples, "my couples" but I think it's very representative of how I look at my clients. I like to think of them as my friends. I like to make them feel comfortable, make them laugh and make them feel fabulous. Afterall, I am sharing one of the most important and intimate days of their lives. From the engagement to the wedding, I am there. And you wouldn't invite a stranger to your wedding now would you? So see, my couples and I, we're tight.

Vanessa & Daniel are young, in love and going places. Their type of love is what moves me. You meet them and you feel their warmth and kindness. I fell in love with them the moment we first met, and after our engagement session, I think Steven and I should be neighbors with them. They are that sweet. Last night before I headed to bed, I received a heartfelt email from Vanessa that I think truly reflects the feeling I try to give my clients.

"Okay so I'm laying in bed and honestly just can't stop thinking about yesterday. Daniel and I have not stopped talking about the experience. On the way home, I literally had a permanent smile on my face and got kinda emotional. The location was beautiful, you are just simply AMAZING, and being there sharing that moment with my soulmate was just so overwhelming - did I mention I was super nervous?! But before I start writing a novel, I just have to tell you and Steve THANK YOU so much for driving out there and capturing our love =) Thank you for getting down on the ground and getting your cute outfit dirty and thank you for putting me at ease and making it comfortable for us. I know this is just the beginning, but we are truly so blessed and incredibly thrilled to have you as our photographer."

Happy Birthday?

I'd love to start this post off with a huge HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME but to be honest, it doesn't even feel like it's my birthday. The days and nights are flying by so quickly that I still haven't even accepted that I'm a day older than 21. Yes, I know, I sound crazy but I'm not lying when I say I don't feel 28. I've decided since I don't feel 28, then I'm not 28. So today, I'm hiding. I'm pressing the dislike button. I'm hitting ctrl-Z. I'm RSVP-ing NO! Hey, it's my blog so I can do what I want.

In all seriousness, although I'm not celebrating my age, I AM celebrating birthday week...which, with me, usually turns into birthday month! In our family, birthday week consists of whatever you want! Don't want to wash the dishes? Someone else will. Want to eat sushi every night of the week? Done! Feel like sleeping in til noon everyday? Ready go. Since this is my first married birthday, I hope Steven is ready for my shenanigans. And for that, I guess it IS a HAPPY BIRTHMONTH TO ME!

Do you ever sit at your computer to get some serious work done only to realize, three hours later, that you haven't completed one thing on your to-do list? With all of the amazingness that lives on the internet at our fingertips, it's impossible not to take a look around and get lost. I wanted to take a minute and share some of my favorite non-wedding related blogs to get lost in. They make me laugh, they make me think and most of all, they inspire me!

+ Diabolina Da Fashionista
A mix between a fashion diary, fashion tips, daily struggles, life stories and self-deprecating humor. I've had the honor of being styled by Diabolina and get to know her as a friend. The first time you view her blog you'll get lost for at least 2 hours. She's that good.

+ I am Style-ish
Also a fashion blogger, this one documents her daily outfits and fashion finds. I was immediately attracted to Tiffany's blog because she's short & petite like me and she helped take the guess work out of what flatters our frames. Plus, she has the most killer shoe collection on the planet.

+ Le Love
Le Love is just a blog dedicated to love. The feeling you get when you love, the pain you feel when you love, the movement and the look of love. Every post reminds you of a different side of that thing called love. It's inspiring.

+ Three Men and a Lady
I don't know much about this blog other than I want my future home to be decorated like hers! She finds the most amazing furniture on the cheap and transforms it into something out of a magazine. It's proof that you don't have to shop at high-end furniture stores to get a high-end look.

+ Sea of Shoes
She's a baby. Literally. And yet, she's in issues of Vogue, has her own line of shoes and gets dressed by Chanel. I was introduced to this blog by Diabolina and I couldn't stop reading. Although most of the outfits are extreme, it's fun to watch this teenager live a fantasy life.

My wish for 2010.

I simply love the start of a new year. It always feels like a clean slate and it definitely gives me a reason to improve on my current lifestyle. I sometimes get ahead of myself with hopes and dreams and ideas. I guess it's not a bad thing to be filled with such desire but sometimes I overwhelm myself. So this year, I've decided to keep it simple. Make realistic goals for myself to make 2010 enjoyable and fabulous!

+ Take more pictures of me & Steven. Together.
+ Stay healthy so i can fit into my wedding gown on May 23. Just for fun.
+ Find a new space for us to live. A pretty one.
+ Cook at least once a week. This does not include Lean Cuisines.
+ Learn how to iron my own shirts.

As we approach the final hours of 2009, I can't help but think how fabulous this year has been. I married my best friend, my business found its heartbeat, I got to know a new city, I've made lots of new friends. But, most of all, I have found myself. Yes, I know I will constantly change as life progresses, but I'm finally comfortable in my own skin and for the first time in a long time, I'm incredibly excited for where my life - as a woman, as a wife, as a business owner - is headed. I feel beyond blessed to be doing what I love and actually moving forward and making it a career. I want to thank all of my interweb friends and readers for all of your support, comments and emails. I absolutely adore the photography community and I'm forever indebted to all of you that keep this blog alive. 2010 is going to bring lots of new things and I'm thrilled you all will be here for the ride!

So here's to new beginnings. Here's to health and success, to love and laughter, to new friends and old friends. Here's to 2010. And because we're dorks, we documented our recent date night with our flip camera to share. I swear, we're fun. And I swear I'm not always on twitter!

The Valencia Family : Whenever

I'm so excited to share this session because the Valencia family was SO much fun! After this session, and my other one with the Ayala Sisters, I'm incredibly in love with siblings-over-the-age-of-13 sessions. It's where I thrive. Pulling out each one's personality, seeing each of their individual sparks makes me love love even more.

Veronica, Elizabeth, David & Katherine wanted to give their parents some update photos for Christmas. They showed up to The Orcutt Ranch in style, hair & makeup done By Lauren, with energy that I wish came in a bottle. Their smiles are so infectious that I think I smiled the entire time too. Here are some of my favorites.

Early resolutions...

Steven: Why are there crumbs in our bed?
Ala: Um, I may have eaten some popcorn while watching Roseanne.
Steven: Okay, so, why is there a chocolate smudge on your pillow?
Ala: Fine! I also ate some chocolate in bed too. Sue me!

This conversation is not a rare occurrence in the Cortez household. You see, in case you haven't been paying attention, I'm a food freak. You name it, I want to eat it. And fast. Every meal, Steven has to remind me to slow down and taste your food woman! More often than not, I burn the crap out of my tongue because I just couldn't wait for something to cool down. I love all kinds of food but I especially love sugar. Banana cream pie, chocolate cake, ice cream, cookies, anything that's bad for me! I've always been this way so it's no wonder I have a love/hate relationship with my scale.

With the new year right around the corner, I thought I'd share what has worked for me just in case anyone is looking for a new workout regimen. I have to preface this all by saying that I absolutely hate the gym, I loathe getting up from the couch and running makes me want to flick rubberbands at the treadmill. So, again, if these workout programs can get a lazy chick up, they're fabulous!

Chalean Extreme - I started this workout in February of 2009 and by my wedding day (May 23, 2009) I had lost 20 pounds! I know right? So super crazy but it works! It's a 90 day plan filled with a variety of resistance exercises and minimal cardio. All you need is something to build resistance. I used resistance bands but light weights work too. I hate cardio and bouncing up and down and this workout was so doable.

p90x - one word, intense. A combination of weight-lifting, plyometrics, yoga, kenpo and cardio makes up this set and it does get you in the best shape. Steven did this workout and all together lost a total of 60 pounds. If you have 1.5 hours available daily, a set of weights (5-25lbs. is average), a pull-up bar or resistance bands, and LOTS of will, do this. It was really hard for me but I do attribute this for keeping my weight off this long.

Insanity - this is our newest conquest. We started it about a week ago and it is very much properly named. The first dvd nearly killed us! But since then, I've learned to love it. It's a lot shorter than most dvd's but it's because you're moving the entire time. No joke. You don't need any equipment which is nice and once you're done, you feel like you're gonna die, which is what I always look for in a workout!

There you go! Those are my secrets to living a life where I don't feel AS guilty when I want to eat popcorn in bed...or even an extra piece of wedding cake. ;)

Who I am...

The past few weeks have been strangely poignant for me. I've been all over the place and nowhere at the same time. And it's all been taking place in my head. Please don't think I'm crazy. Well, I am but, I like to think of it as a healthy crazy. You see, I've been trying to define myself. Really get to the core of me. Who I am. What I stand for. Where I come from. What's my look. What's my style. And it's been incredibly humbling. For a second there, I kinda got lost. I was thinking way too much about being the coolest, stylish, most awesome me that I was forgetting the best part. I was forgetting to actually be me.

Last week, over wine, red velvet cupcakes and some amazing friends, I had a thought. This is the me I want to capture - the giggles, the honesty, the comfort, the unabashed interest in seeing through to another person's heart. I'd take a picture if I could but then you couldn't hear my childish laugh. You couldn't smell my color-extend shampoo. You couldn't feel my warm hugs. That is when I realized it. I can't possibly define me. I have to just BE me. And that's all I can ever do.

What I'm trying to say is if you want to hear about my battles with chocolate, my obsession with old Roseanne episodes, and my high-school style romance with my husband, then stay tuned. All of this thinking is for something in the works that is super close to my heart. It's me. And I can't wait to share it. In the meantime, I want everyone to remember to be the best YOU you can be. It's all we've got!

Stephanie & Jeff : Married

The room was quiet. Random bridal items were scattered around - a dress hanging here, some shoes laying there, the kids table crayons on the floor, nothing in any real order. The beautiful November light beamed through the window and there was Stephanie, gorgeous and calm, literally illuminating the room with her presence. It was as if she had done this before, it was as if she already knew the day would be perfect.

As Stephanie spotted Jeff overlooking the ocean at the picturesque Terranea Resort for their first look, she squealed with excitement. She rushed toward him as if she was saving all her energy for this very moment. Jeff stood there waiting for his bride and as he turned around, they both emotionally embraced. It was as if they knew seeing each other before the ceremony would be the start to their perfect day. And it was.

The rest of the day was spent exchanging rounds of warm hugs and thank-you’s with their guests. After some heartfelt toasts and a few rounds of shots Jeff and Stephanie spent the evening starting the first day of the rest of their lives together. And I had the honor of capturing their day. A huge thank you to Kathy Recchia of Save The Date Events for coordinating the day to flow as smoothly as possible. And a special thanks to my favorite Ashley Rose for helping me out. It was fabulous working with you both! Steph and Jeff, I've said it before but I'll say it again, I love you guys! Thank you for letting me be a part of your day and I wish you both love, happiness and a lifetime of blessings. xoxo

Stephanie & Jeremiah : Whenever

They laugh. Together. At each other. A lot. It's just what they do. Jeremiah makes little jokes and whether they're funny or not, Steph laughs because well, to her, anything he does is cute. It's a love and sense of humor that only a husband and wife can comprehend. Stephanie and Jeremiah were married in September and still are giddy around one another. Although I was unable to shoot their wedding, I was able to meet up with them to capture some fabulously relaxed frames.

They recently moved to Los Angeles, steps away from the artsy Melrose Avenue so they decided to keep their session close to home. Wander the streets near them. Where they live. Where they eat. Where the cool pubs are. It was the perfect backdrop to their new little life together. Steph and Jer: thanks for welcoming me into your home and sharing a small history lesson on your family traditions. It was so much fun catching up. Enjoy!

The Pelayo Family

It's always challenging when attempting to photograph a 2 year old. They're full of life, full of giggles, full of energy and most of the time, way quicker than me. But when Crystal emailed me about my holiday sessions and told me they hadn't had photos taken of Dalilah, ever, I literally jumped at the opportunity. I love a challenge and I love being able to freeze a moment for families to treasure in their home. Oscar, Crystal and Dalilah showed up dressed with style and big smiles on their faces. Dalilah was a doll and gave me my cardio workout for the day. I didn't mind though, I could have listened to her giggles all day!

Lizzy & David : Darling

Some people just warm your hearts. They take one look at each other and you feel their chemistry. There are no words spoken, no hand signals. Just a simple look. It's so inspiring. Lizzy and David have this connection and it made me never want to put the camera down. They both are very calm and happy people and from the moment we met, I knew we'd be fast friends. Well, that and Lizzy sent me her blog address prior to our session so I could get to know them. Ya'll know how much I love blogging so it was really great to get an intimate look at their lives.

With every client, I love getting to know them as friends. I genuinely want to know your interests, what you love, your favorite pizza topping, you know, all the vital information. What's cool about Lizzy and David is they are close friends of (my favorites!) Leinea & Ed and Christina & Joey. So I felt like we were old pals by the time they got in front of my camera. Ayala Sisters : Whenever

I say this a lot. And I will most likely continue to say this every single session. I am so incredibly blessed to have a job where I get to meet so many amazing, happy, beautiful people. All the time. At their best. In cute outfits. With great big smiles. And lots of love.

The Ayala girls are the definition of a perfect family session. Look it up. In the dictionary there's a picture of Evie, Vanessa, Genevieve, Marisa and Sophia. Last week, we met up at Pio Pico Historic Park. These girls are so incredibly bubbly, talkative, sassy, feisty and fun. They were so warm and welcoming that I couldn't help but feel like an Ayala girl that day. If I didn't have the camera in my hands, I very well could have jumped high in the air with them or make a wish on dandelions. Thank you girls for choosing me to play around on a Saturday afternoon. I had such a great time and I can't wait for all of your milestones in the years to come. xoxo
