The Jasmine Star Workshop

Never in a million years did I think I'd be at a point in my life where I'd be able to pursue something that makes my heart smile. Something that I genuinely enjoy, something that fulfills my life, something that allows me to connect with other human beings and share in their life stories. For me, it's being a photographer. Sometimes I wake up and think someone is going to come tap on my shoulder and tell me "nice try Ala, but you can't possibly be a photographer. What you're doing right now is not real. Wake up, sister, you're dreamin'!"

Yesterday, I attended the incredible Jasmine Star Workshop and I attempted to do something about my dream. I figured, as clients, Steven and I had a 100% smooth process since we booked her as our photographer so it'd be silly of me not to sit down and want to learn from her. You know, the behind the scenes festivities of what made the process so dang seamless. What I did not anticipate was attending the workshop and challenging myself. Really and truly, looking inward and asking myself what I want out of life. What do I want as a photographer? How can I define myself? What is me? And it was like, whoa.

Last night at dinner, among 20 other amazing photographers, in the presence of 2 people I respect - Jasmine and JD, with my supportive husband by my side, something clicked. I guess the day's events had taken a while to sink in. Perhaps it was all the carbs I ate that was slowing me down from processing the idea that I'm here. I'm this close. I can feel it. Taste it. It's happening. I'm finally ready to accept and run with the dream I've so longed for. Something I thought I could never do. And I vowed to quit tappin' myself on the shoulder to wake up. Because, well, it's more fun to dream.

Jasmine organized a fabulous session for us so we could see how she shoots and how she interacts with her clients. It was way cool to see things from her point of view because all other times I've been the one shakin' in my boots in front of the lens. Carissa of JL Designs worked her magic on the romantically vintage bouquet. The hanging lace was killer. Vivian Tran of All Made Up was on hand for hair and makeup and I was obsessed. I'm pretty sure I harassed her for about 20 minutes with all my praises.

Jasmine challenged us to do something that makes us feel uncomfortable. Something we'd be afraid to do on any of our own shoots as there was no client pressure here. For me, that meant shooting with my 85mm, wiiiiide open. Holy moly. I think I'm in love with tight shots now. Plus I can give clients some space when it's hot.

Jasmine and JD, THANK YOU for your generosity, honesty and friendship. I can't express in words how much you mean to my little business that just found its heartbeat. I wish I could take a picture of the space in my heart reserved for you two. And to all the attendees who I had the chance to get to know, thank you for rockin' it. I can't wait to see the direction everyone is headed now that all the possibilities are at our fingertips. xoxo

I know you're sick of me saying that I'm proud of you, but dammit I am! I mean I already think you're bomba, and then you go off and attend a J* workshop? ugh. perfection x10. I'm so excited for you, your business and your future. Don't forget the liddo people when you blow up and the rest of the world sees what I've been seeing...a fabulous, fun and talented photographer who adores what she does. I can't wait!!

Great shots from the workshop Alicia! I had the opportunity to go to the first J* workshop in March and my head is still spinning. I came back with 20 pages of notes and refer to them all the time. Can't wait to see where God takes your business. Blessings to you!

Le sigh, to know your dream AND follow it? Jealousy.

You, my dear are living my dream not just taking the pretty pictures part (another sigh at those lovelies above) but feeling blessed to wake up and actually look forward to work that is doing something positive. Lucky!
