Blessings & Brownies

Yesterday started off like many Sunday mornings do - sleep in, moan about an achy bone or two and plan my cheat meal for the day. I decided to peel myself out of bed and go to brunch with my family. As I agonized over what dessert to guiltily gobble down, brownie or churro, my 18-year old niece expressed her fears of moving away to college. What if I miss home? What if I don't meet people that make me feel how you guys do? Etc. And then my father, man of few words, said something that stopped my salivating right there and then, Be thankful that you're off to college and not off to war. My niece and I shot a quick glance to each other and we both realized how lucky we are.

You see, when my father was 18, by no choice of his own, he was drafted into the Vietnam War. He didn't have the luxury of choosing what college to attend. The privilege to pursue an art degree. The chance to go out on a limb and follow a dream. No, no, at 18, all he saw in his immediate future was fighting for our country, for our freedom. He rarely talks in depth about those years. And although I know his story, I sometimes forget how different our lives have been. At that table, I shot a quick glance at my father to briefly let him see how lucky I feel.

After our meal, I came home and reflected on the single sentence that came out of his mouth. I realized that I am lucky and I'm grateful for all of the opportunities ahead of me. I won't take things for granted. I will work hard, set my mind to my goals, plan for them and freely reach for them. And when I begin to lose my way, well then I'll just eat a brownie and a churro. You know, to remind me of yesterday's meal where my father reminded us of our blessings.

Speaking of blessings, I feel incredibly blessed when I'm at work, and my gorgeous couples pull me into a photo booth just to act silly...

That was awesome and so are you. My dad was in Vietnam as well. In fact he knows your dad. Thanks for the reminder that life shouldn't be taken for granted!
