Happy Birthday, Steven!

Today my beautiful husband-to-be (I puffy heart saying husband any way/any time I can!) turns another year older - 29. A very young looking 29, no? I'm incredibly grateful for this man who walked into my life 6.5 years ago and I'm very much looking forward to growing old with him. When we're together, I'm pretty sure we resemble 2 school-aged kids joking and giggling at obscene jokes and still reeling from the fact that we're allowed to date, complete with butterflies and all. I love that about him. He brings out the kid in me.

All he wants today (in his words) is to workout and eat a good, hearty lunch. Food? I'm in! Hey, I'm not going to fight the birthday boy on his wishes. And since I posted a young birthday picture of me, here's a young picture of little Steven.

I'm off to New York this evening for my bachelorette party! Wooo! And before you all think I'm a crazy mean fiance who is completely ignoring his birthday, let me add that he is heading to Las Vegas this weekend for his. So I guess we both will be enjoying birthday weekend! I have no idea what the plans are for New York. All I know is what time I need to be at the airport. Apparently, the rest is a surprise so I'm literally on the edge of my seat right now! I do know that I have the most amazing friends and sisters on earth and I can't wait to play! I will be back to returning any emails on Monday, March 30. xoxo

Leinea & Ed : Whenever

In a world where you can go on the internet and access an infinite amount of information, Leinea somehow found me. After exchanging emails over the last few months, we came to find out that our husbands (well, my soon-to-be husband =)) work together and grew up playing sports against each other. We had actually met over 2 years ago at a holiday party and hadn't realized it until later! Huge internet world = small real world!

Leinea and Ed have been happily married for a few years and wanted some updated images of the two of them. I love, love, love this because I know most people don't make time to document their relationship just because. Leinea is the type of girl that you want to be your friend - cheerful, kind and fabulous. And Ed, well, he quietly listens and laughs alongside her with an ear to ear smile. Clearly, these two make each other better.

I had a great time last weekend roaming Abbot Kinney in Venice with them. Although it was an intensely windy day, we managed to find lots of color, some quiet spots and most importantly, I had the opportunity to capture this stage of their relationship. Thank you both putting your faith in me. I can't wait to hang out again! xoxo

Isn't Leinea's smile simply infectious?

I warned them at the beginning that I may stop mid-sentence if I see a spot we should be shooting in. Since it was a windy day, Ed would throw on his shades and her the jacket between spots. As you can see, it all happened so fast, they're still wearing both. But I love it!

I was tempted to contact Fred Huffman to sell me this bus. I love old cars with character. I think it makes this image that much more fun!

Special Delivery!

Guess what's in the mail today?

FINALLY! Working with a smaller guest list has proven to be one of the more difficult tasks I've encountered while planning our wedding. Both our parents have about 23 siblings between them and you know what that means - lots of cousins, and second cousins, and third cousins. The woes of a humongous Mexican family. This isn't even factoring in our friends! Early on in our engagement though, we decided that even if we had a platinum wedding style budget to work with, we would still want something small and intimate. Sounds easy right? In theory, I'm sure it is. But in real life, not so much.

Anyway, I'm just so excited that my little beauties have finally reached their departure date. And that the people closest to us will have them in their hands very shortly. 16 months down, 2 months to go.

Alicia se casa con Esteban!

A lot has been going on in casa de modern type. My lack of blog posts has not been due to laziness. In fact, it has been due to early planning and completing my to-do lists. Which is very unlike me. I'm the type of girl who always waits until the last minute. All of my design projects in college were completed the night before/morning of the due date and you know what? They were more fabulous because of it! I don't know what it is, but I work best under pressure. With the assistance of red bull and flamin' hot cheetos, I always pushed through and managed to get A's.

Something told me though, this would not be the best approach when handling our wedding. Out of thin air, I've been able to finish things early and wouldn't you know it, I'm actually enjoying it! I'm not stressing, worrying, or losing sleep. Perhaps I should have learned this whole 'start early' technique before?

Here are a few things that have been going on in my land...

We took our engagement photos and have already received all of our proofs. If you haven't been bombarded with them by now, you can go check them out here. I plan on doing a full post on the whole experience so be on the lookout for that soon.

The bridesmaids dresses are in and I must say I could not be happier! The color and the fit is divine. The versatility of the dress boggles my mind and I'm so happy we chose to go this route. I'd post pictures but I know a lot of our guests read this blog and I want them to have something to look forward to so I'll be sure to post lots after the wedding. But let's just say that my bridesmaids and I played the other night for at least 2 hours prancing and dancing around in the dresses. And yes, the rumors are true, I loved it so much, I bought one for myself. =)

Since I'm obsessed with fabric rosettes and flowers and feathers and beading these days, I commissioned custom pins to be worn on the bridesmaid dresses. I know I've raved about etsy before, but if you haven't already, get your butt onto that site! I stumbled on Beetle and Bloom while doing a random hair flower search so I contacted her on a whim. Jessica immediately responded and has been a dream to work with! She took all of my scattered ideas and inspiration photos and came up with incredible pieces! What I loved most about working with Jess is her great eye and attention to detail. She wasn't afraid to offer suggestions to make things better or have a more detailed, natural look. Here are the finished bridesmaid pieces and best of all, they're custom!

Our honeymoon is booked! After going back and forth for what felt like forever, Steven and I were a bit overwhelmed. We wanted to pick somewhere we'd never been and that we probably won't ever get to visit again but we also didn't want to break the bank. Afterall, our planned itinerary for our honeymoon is to do absolutely nothing so choosing a place with incredible sights to see didn't make much sense considering we aren't interested in moving around much. I'd actually be thrilled to just spend a week with him locally but I know we deserve more. We narrowed down our 'must-haves' to a beautiful beach, all-inclusive, cost-effective, and adults only (although I adore children, we're not parents yet for a reason). We finally chose Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and we are so excited! Here are a few pictures of our resort. I can't wait to sit in the jacuzzi tub for hours at a time. Yes, I'm the girl who goes somewhere tropical and stays in her room. Sue me.

Our DIY invitations have been completed for about 2 weeks now. Can you believe that? I'm still reeling from the thought of me, the procrastinator, getting something so big done so early! They're set to go out next week and I'll definitely be sharing them here. There's lots more and I'm sure everyone is over reading my details. Whenever I sit down to write an update post, I just get excited and I tend to write too much.

My first wedding of the year is finally tomorrow, my bachelorette party is next weekend, and its all just happening so fast. Must Breathe. Must smile. Must enjoy every moment. xoxo

Our Turn : My Wedding

I remember the first time I ever considered pursuing photography, looooong before we got engaged. I scoured the internet looking at photographers. Fashion photographers, commercial photographers, portrait photographers, studio name it, I was looking it up and soaking up as much inspiration as I could. I was slowly finding the style of photography I was most attracted to.

Enter my good friends Sandra and Paul. In the summer of 2006, they got engaged and immediately my close circle of friends hurled ourselves into the infinite abyss known as wedding planning. As most of you know, finding wedding inspiration on the internet is like going to target for hairspray. You go in looking for one thing but you're distracted by 2,938 other cool things and end up filling your cart with a plethora of knick knacks to last you a lifetime.

Anyway, I remember while my friends were stalking designer dresses and florals and shoes and venues, I quickly became obsessed with something I had never even thought of - wedding photography. I got lost in blog after blog. Who were these people? Why had I never stumbled on them before? And how was it that the photojournalism style I had so related to was here all along and I hadn't known? It was the greatest discovery ever and I'm pretty sure I got nothing done at work for about a month.

During my quest to devour every wedding photography blog around, I ran across a little blogger site belonging to someone named Jasmine Star. Intrigued by her name, I sat in my living room and read through some of her entries. She was young and funny and relatable. Her images were so crisp and fun and each couple looked like they were having the time of their lives. I followed her blog religiously and it had quickly become one of my favorite reads. I was hooked. And I had made the decision. She would be my wedding photographer. So what if I WASN'T EVEN ENGAGED?! Minor details people!

The other day, Steven and I met with Jasmine for our long awaited engagement session. Through a muddy hiking trail, we all talked about love, photography, life, The Hills, shoes, and weddings. Like we were old friends. We enjoyed every second of it and although we were nervous in the beginning, she totally made us forget about the photos and just enjoy each other. I can't wait to see the pictures because I have no doubt that she will do a fabulous job but more than that, I can't wait for our wedding! Getting dressed up and staring into Steven's big brown eyes (and those lashes!) all day long is definitely what I signed up for! Oh, and I'm sure the wedding reception we've been planning for the last year won't be too shabby either. 74 days!

And just because I know she'll be posting pictures of us on her blog, I thought it was only fitting to post a few silly ones I snapped at the end of our session on my blog. =)

P.S. I can't end this post without thanking my good friend/assistant/cheerleader Bea for coming along and helping out at the very last minute. xoxo
